As a budding activist, I've recently found myself navigating a challenging balancing act between my passion for social justice and the demands of personal life. While my documentary on homelessness has been a rewarding experience, the constant pressures of research, workshops, and the emotional weight of the subject matter have taken a toll on my well-being.
I've learned a valuable lesson: you cannot pour from an empty cup. While I'm committed to advocating for the homeless community, I must also prioritize my own mental and emotional health. It's easy to feel guilty when we're unable to meet the demands of our activism, but it's crucial to remember that self-care is not selfish.
I've been fortunate to have a supportive friend who has helped me understand the importance of setting boundaries and finding joy in small victories. He's reminded me that my ability to make a positive impact is directly linked to my own well-being, and he is the one who taught me that ''you cannot pour from an empty cup''
A recent encounter with another friend highlighted the need for compassion and understanding within the activist community. When I shared my work, showing the new things I had learned through workshops and research over a couple of weeks, my friend's response was harsh and accusatory, due to the fact that while working on these things I had not taken the time to visit the very first people I had a shoot with for the documentary, and I had no idea how they were doing. Instead of offering support and encouragement, he placed the burden of their expectations on me. It's important to recognize that my friend's reaction was unintentional, but also it was not conducive to a healthy and productive conversation. Their accusatory tone and harsh words contributed to my feelings of guilt and shame.
I had to do a significant amount of self-introspection. I've identified the importance of self-care and have acknowledged the need for compassion and understanding within the activist community.

This experience has taught me that activists must be kind to themselves and to each other. We're all doing our best, and it's okay to take breaks, seek help, and prioritize our own needs.
To my fellow activists and those who support us:
Be patient with yourself. Activism can be emotionally draining. It's okay to take a step back and recharge.
Build a supportive network. Surround yourself with people who understand your passion and offer encouragement.
Practice self-care. Prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional health.
Be compassionate to others. Remember that we're all in this together.
By fostering a culture of compassion and understanding, we can create a more supportive and sustainable environment for activists and those we serve. Let's continue to spread love, hope, and positive change in the world.
